Lake County Adult Correctional Facility in Illinois has received the National Institute for Jail Operations’ Detention Facility Innovation Award, recognizing a broad range of improvements to safety, security and correctional operations.

Among the improvements specifically highlighted by the National Institute for Jail Operations (NIJO) was the facility’s introduction of a body scanner to strengthen contraband detection efforts and help prevent dangerous items, including weapons and drugs, from entering the secure facility.

Correctional News identified the system as the LINEV Systems ClearPass body scanner, which was placed into service in March 2026 after correctional officers completed specialized training.

For LINEV Systems, the deployment provides an important example of full-body X-ray screening being incorporated as one component of a broader correctional security strategy.

A Correctional Body Scanner Among Lake County’s Security Improvements

The Detention Facility Innovation Award recognizes detention facilities that demonstrate exceptional achievement in developing or improving an aspect of their facility or operations.

Lake County was recognized for a broad approach that included investment in new technology, equipment, training, specialized resources and programming.

NIJO specifically noted the introduction of a body scanner as one of those improvements.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has described contraband prevention as an ongoing challenge for correctional facilities, particularly when prohibited items are concealed in ways that may be difficult to identify through traditional search methods.

The body scanner provides correctional officers with an additional screening layer designed to assist staff in identifying potential concealed contraband.

ClearPass Adds Full-Body X-Ray Screening to the Security Process

ClearPass is a full-body X-ray screening system designed for correctional facilities, detention centers and other high-security environments.

The system provides high-resolution full-body X-ray imaging and AI-assisted image analysis to support operator review of potential concealed contraband.

ClearPass is designed to assist operators in screening for a range of prohibited objects and materials, including:

• narcotics and drugs;
• weapons, including guns and knives;
• electronics and cell phones;
• metallic and non-metallic prohibited objects;
• items concealed on or inside the body.

The screening technology is intended to supplement established correctional security procedures by providing operators with additional X-ray information for review.

Operator judgment remains part of the screening process, with the technology supporting rather than replacing security personnel in evaluating potential areas of concern.

Why Contraband Detection Remains a Correctional Security Priority

Preventing drugs, weapons and other prohibited items from entering secure areas remains an important challenge for jails and correctional facilities.

Lake County stated that some prohibited items can be concealed in ways that are difficult to identify through traditional search methods. Its decision to introduce a body scanner added another screening capability to the facility’s existing security procedures.

Public Lake County procurement records also show that the Sheriff’s Office identified a need to expand security technology within the jail and selected LINEV Systems US Inc. to provide a full-body digital security screening system.

The county’s procurement documentation identified concealed illegal contraband, including drugs and weapons, and ingested foreign objects among the security concerns associated with the project.

Technology as One Part of a Broader Security Strategy

The body scanner was not the only improvement recognized as part of Lake County’s award.

NIJO highlighted the Correctional Division’s broader investment in technology, equipment and operational resources, including enhancements to its Correctional Response Team and the introduction of a corrections K9 program.

This broader context is important. The Detention Facility Innovation Award recognizes the work of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Correctional Division and its overall approach to improving correctional operations.

ClearPass represents one of the security technologies incorporated into that wider initiative.

From Procurement to Operational Deployment

Lake County approved the purchase of a full-body digital security screening system from LINEV Systems US Inc. in December 2025 as part of the Sheriff’s Office effort to expand security technology within the jail.

The procurement included the screening system as well as associated software, staff training and warranty support.

According to Lake County, correctional staff completed specialized training before the new body scanner was placed into service in March 2026.

This progression — from identifying an operational security requirement to procurement, staff preparation and implementation — demonstrates how new screening technology can be incorporated into an established correctional environment as part of a broader security process.

Lake County Receives National Recognition

The National Institute for Jail Operations presented the Detention Facility Innovation Award during the JAILCON26 Central Regional Conference in Overland Park, Kansas.

NIJO recognized the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Correctional Division for its commitment to improving safety, security and operational effectiveness through innovation and investment in technology, equipment and programs.

The recognition belongs to the Lake County correctional professionals and staff responsible for implementing and operating those improvements.
